COBRA Corporation Trooper - LIBERTY 2215

COBRA Corporation Troopers are part solider, part law enforcement and part military unit. Any element that threatens the profits of the COBRA Corporation are considered criminal and enemies of the state, and are dealt with swiftly by COBRA's forces.

CCTs wear heavier armor than their Officers; bulkier, more restrictive of movement, and less ornate. They're expected to be fearless and and unreserved in their defense of the Corporation.

These two were made for the LIBERTY 2215 group project at joecustoms, which depicts a far-future world where COBRA has evolved into a super-corpo-nation, but didn't get finished in time for the deadline.

Parts Recipe:
ROC Cobra Commander - Torso
Resolute Zartan - Armor
Retaliation Zartan - Thighs
Zartan - Shoulders
FLAK Viper - Helmet
Destro - Guantlets and Gloves
Resolute Snake Eyes - Knees and Boots
Darth Vader - Lower Armor

COBRA Corporation Officer - LIBERTY 2215

COBRA Corporation Officers, like the Troopers they oversee, are part law enforcement and part military unit. Any element that threatens the profits of the COBRA Corporation are considered criminal and enemies of the state, and are dealt with swiftly by COBRA's forces.

Officers enjoy an advanced and ornate suit of high tech body armor that allow them greater mobility (and comfort) than standard Troopers, meant to inspire respect (or at least obedience) in all citizen-shareholders.

I was totally sold by the Black Vulture con exclusive that used this chest with a COBRA emblem painted on it. I took a lot of my inspiration from the Advent character designs from X-Com 2, and tried to use that look as a base for my future version of the COBRA's rank and file. I had wanted to try to make a red half-cape work (like the Advent Captains in X-Com), but it felt too much like the Iron Grenadiers Destro, so I opted to not include it.

LIBERTY 2215 was a joecustoms.com that revisited the world of LIBERTY 2198.

Wallace "Ripcord" Weems - Torso, Waist
Iron Grenadier - Shoulder, Legs
Destro - Arms

Hatchling with Baroness - COBRA Go-Kart and Driver

BARONESS'S personal COBRA-Cart is the HATCHLING, a miniature version of the HISS built for both speed and strength. The large treads and low center of gravity help it plow over (or straight through) just about any obstacle she might encounter on the track (or off it, if any short-cuts are spotted). It's basically just a tank engine with an attached seat, but what it lacks in style it makes up for in raw power. THE BARONESS did allow herself a little fun in designing it though, and managed to sweet-talk DESTRO into donating an old battle mask for the hood ornament.

I suck at vehicles. There's a point about half-way through where everything just starts going wrong. This was supposed to be a mini-HISS like go-cart, but it really just looks like a tractor or bulldozer without the blade. There's a lot of modifications that went well, but in the end I still need a lot more practice with spray paints to get the smooth finish I'm wanting. There was a GI Joe counterpart to this that I abandoned on the last day of the project just from how discouraged I was with how the vehicles were coming out. Originally, the driver was going to be a Baroness style after Fast Pussycat, Kill! Kill! but I liked how she was coming out so much I decided she needed to be an original character to save for later. For as disappointed as I am in the vehicles, I'm really happy with the Baroness. The proportions on the "new sculpt" era Joes are all over the place, but that torso and waist is pretty solid. It was an experiment if I could make those parts work for a modern style figure, and I think it came out great.

Parts Recipe:
Weapon Transport - Base Body
Wetsuit Flashlight - Headlights
Polar Battle Bear - Seat Back Frame
Model Car Kit - Inner Seat, Blower, Tread Guards
CAT Bull Dozer - HISS-Style Treads

DESTRO - Hood Ornament
Armadillo - Rollbars

Baroness:
SpyTroops Era Baroness - Torso, Waist
Baroness - Legs
Lady Sif - Head
Resolute Baroness - Glasses
Black Widow - Gloves

Virgil - Lemurian Scholar

I never played with Mighty Max toys as a kid, but the cartoon sort of blew my mind. It had a lot of implied and overt darkness for children's cartoon, especially for when it came out. Quite a few 90's cartoons seemed to be trying to emulate the sophistication and success of the Batman Animated Series, but most of them did a pretty poor imitation. A few gems, like Mighty Max, managed to emulate a lot of the right aspects.

Virgil was the bird/owl/chicken?-like Guide for the Mighty One. I'm particularly happy with how this guy came out, almost like a Henson-creature update to the design.

Parts Recipe:
Schliech Owl - Head, Feet
Thuggee Guard - Torso, Arms, Robes
Orn Free Taa - Hands
Henry Jones Sr. - Glasses
Hard Master - Rolled Up Scroll
Jawa - Legs

Norman - Protector of The Mighty One

I never played with Mighty Max toys as a kid, but the cartoon sort of blew my mind. It had a lot of implied and overt darkness for children's cartoon, especially for when it came out. Quite a few 90's cartoons seemed to be trying to emulate the sophistication and success of the Batman Animated Series, but most of them did a pretty poor imitation. A few gems, like Mighty Max, managed to emulate a lot of the right aspects.

Norman was a great character, a guardian of the Mighty One who had been known by many different names throughout history including Thor, Hercules, Samson, Lancelot, and Little John. Fitting that some of his parts come from at least one of those characters, as well.

Parts Recipe:
Hercules - Head
Ares - Torso, Bare Arm, Hands, Ponytail, Upper Legs
Thunderstrike - Boots
Colossus - Armored Arm
Mercenary Wraith - Gauntlet
Hulk - Belts and Armor
Iron Grenadier - Pauldron
Chap Mei - Chain Belt

Launchpad - Pilot and Sidekick

Another humanized character from the old Disney Afternoon cartoons, Launchpad was a prominent character in both Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck. It was difficult to decide how to translate the exaggerated characteristics of the cartoon into a real world, human version.  I always thought he was supposed to be a pelican, due to the large jaw/beak thing going on, but evidently he's a duck. My version could have used a broader chest or stronger jaw, but I'm still pretty happy with how he looks.

Parts Recipe:
General Hawk - Torso, Arms
ROC Destro - Legs
Rebel Pilot - Head

Quiver Wing - AKA Gosalyn

In researching more Darkwing Dark and other Disney Afternoon characters to reimagine as human characters, I discovered Gosalyn from Darkwing had her own super hero identity she used from time to time. That Injustice Harley Quinn head with the mask and pigtails is what got me started on the project, and concept art Luke/Leia worked great to flesh out the rest of the design. I swaped purple for black in her color scheme, and updated her design to an older, teenage look, but I think she came out pretty well.

INJUSTICE Harley Quinn - Head, Waist, Upper Legs, Boots
Concept Art Luke Skywalker - Arms, Gloves, Torso, Lower Legs

Hardwire/Haywire/Hotwire - COBRA Science Clones

These guys have been sitting finished and unphotographed for probably close to a year. I loved coming up with them though. I was on a COBRA Science kick after the SPIRITS vs CORPSE group project and wanted to update that con exclusive figure with the Street Fighter Blanka head. But I could never remember his name. Was it Hotwire? Hardwire? I had already used Haywire for the name of a Star Wars Clone Mechanic, and that's when inspiration stuck. I'd use all three names, and make them a trio of clones.

I used a standard recipe with a little variation so they'd look similar, and based their general color scheme on Renegades Mindbender. Working on them, I realized I could also get a pretty dead on Renegades Mindbender out of the project too, with a simple head swap.

As COBRA's science endeavors grow and expand, it needs more raw brain power to manage each of their divisions and various avenues of research. That's where Hotwire, Hardwire, and Haywire come in. They share one of the greatest and most gifted scientific minds in history. The problem is, they can't seem to remember or agree who's the original and who're the clones. This causes a great deal of antagonizing and strife among the group as they squabble over who's in charge, each under the impression that they are the original and therefore the leader. What's worse, not many members of COBRA can keep their names straight which only confuses things more. If they were able to set their differences, or more accurately their genetic similarities, aside and work as a team the world would be in real trouble. And even the ruthless COBRA COMMANDER doesn't have the heart to suggest that they might ALL be clones, even if it might put an end to their arguing.

Heads - Buzzer / Blowtorch / MIB3 BorisCoats - Rex "The Doctor" Lewis
Arms - Wedge Antilles / Admiral Ackbar

Following his failure in the "SWARM" project, Glitch hid himself away and remade himself -- literally. He adapted technology from various generations of B.A.T.s, especially the modular and self-repair aspects of several designs, and emerged describing himself as the ultimate cyborg and the perfect expression of weaponry and technology. He's determined to make up from previous failures, and sees Cobra Commander's most extreme project ever, the Artemis Cannon, as the perfect means of doing so.

From the Throne of Cobra Commander: "I always knew Glitch was a bit around the bend, but this --- this is insane even for him. As far as anyone's been able to figure, the only human part of him left is his brain, and to what degree that's in good working order is open to interpretation. I mean, he still stutters, even after all this! Nonetheless, he's convinced me that he might actually be able to take charge of one of my -- ahem -- more ambitious ideas, and make it work. And he's certainly well-suited to the environment now. Glitch will get his opportunity with the Artemis Cannon, and if he succeeds, it will be Cobra's greatest victory ever!"

When Bucky approached me about contributing a figure to the third round of Resurgence, we bounced a few ideas around until I asked if anyone was working on a new version of Glitch, my personal favorite character from the first two years of the project, and he let me take a crack at it.

I eventually combined my plans for Glitch with an idea I had for a Joe themed DARPA Big Dog robot, and started trying all sorts of random part combinations. When I came up with the basic build of the accessory robot, I thought it would be a neat play feature if its parts could be interchangeable with Glitch.

I tried to make use of parts that had been used for Glitch and some of the SWARM characters, suggesting that he had to rebuild himself using SWARM debris after the events of Resurgence 2.

Star Wars Bathroom/Refresher Symbol

"Hey Dan, what did you do when you got up today?"

"I made a bathroom symbol for a fictional universe, then spent a few hours wondering what I'm doing with my life."

Star Wars "REFRESHER" symbol. Because...
